Post Harvest Profile of Soybean

P R E F A C E

Soybean is a fast expanding oilseed crop in India.  During recent years, it has shown a tremendous growth in production in the country. Out of estimated production of 15.06 million tonnes of all the oil seeds in the country, the soybean shared about 30 percent (4.56 million tonnes) during the year 2002-03. The soybean has a vibrant international trade due to it’s multiple beneficial qualities. Soybean is being promoted as an important oilseed under the ‘Technology Mission on Oilseeds and Pulses’ in India. For its nutritional profile, the soy food market has the potential to grow at about 200 percent per annum. 

This profile has been prepared with a view to enable the farmers and various market functionaries to scientifically manage the post-harvest operations of soybean in order to realise remunerative price. This profile covers all important aspects of marketing including post-harvest management, marketing practices, quality standards and grading, packaging, transportation, storage, SPS requirements, etc. and could be of immense use to the various stake holders involved in marketing of Soybean, in general, and the producer-sellers in particular, in the changing global agricultural marketing scenario.
