In Indian agriculture, the maize crop assumes a special significance. Maize is a rare-crop, which is utilized as food, feed and fodder. It is used at any stage of it’s growth and has several industrial uses. In the year 2004, the production of maize in India was 14000 thousand tonnes. It is the major source of starch (71 to 72 percent) which can be converted in to glucose and fructose. It is also exported to other countries as maize seed and maize (corn) flour. Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh are the major maize producing states.
The Inter-Ministerial Task Force on Agricultural Marketing Reforms in their report, submitted in May, 2002, suggested several measures of strengthening agricultural marketing system in the country, for benefiting the farmers. This profile has been prepared with a view to enable the farming community to scientifically manage the post harvest operations in respect of maize. The profile covers all aspects of the marketing of maize; i.e. post harvest management, marketing practices, standards, grading, packaging, transportation, storage etc.
